FIELD STUDIES by David Reuter

Whenever I travel, I like to bring a sketchbook and drawing materials along with me so that I can capture a memory from my trip. There’s always an Old Church, Fire Station or Engine Company around somewhere that is still active or that’s been converted into a bar, restaurant, nightclub or modern office space that I can. I also enjoy sketching subjects here in Tennessee where I live. I feel that I’m surrounded by beauty and that I don’t need to travel to somewhere exotic to find something inspiring to draw. As an Artist, it’s always uplifting for me to stumble across a subject that catches my attention and to spend a few hours sketching it.

If you “Hover Over” one of my drawings, a description box will appear with Hyperlinks. If you “CLICK ON THE TITLE” it will connect to “Google Maps” or “Google Earth” and you’ll be transported to a street view or a satellite view of the subject.

Sketching is an activity that always places me in a moment and I try to capture something about that experience in my drawing. At the same time. I’m also trying to be a little forward looking because I’d love to further develop these studies into watercolors someday. I like a loose drawing style that focuses on movement, shapes and expression because that style feels emotional and personalized.

I hope enjoy a few of my Field Studies”.

LILLIE MILLS GRAIN ELEVATORS - FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE

This is a "Field Study" that I did of The LILLIE MILLS GRAIN ELEVATORS in Franklin, Tennessee. The Franklin Flouring Mill was established on this site in 1869 and at its peak it produced over 70,000 barrels of Franklin Lady Flour per year. The concrete grain elevators in my drawing were built around 1926 and could store over 250,000 bushels of grain. The Mill was destroyed in a fire in 1958 but these Grain Elevators survived and they continued to operate for three decades.

ENGINE COMPANY 16 TRUCK COMPANY 3 - WASHINGTON D.C.

This is my “Field Study” of ENGINE COMPANY 16 TRUCK COMPANY 3. Located in downtown Washington, D.C.  Designed by architect Albert L Harris and built in 1932, this beautiful building is listed on The National Register of Historic Places and is still in service today as an Active Fire Station. It’s sandwiched in between some modern office buildings and I wonder if the people who work in those offices ever even notice this little building or take a moment to stop and appreciate its beauty.

It’s surprising how loud city streets can be when they’re filled with cars, busses and delivery trucks and between the noise and the constant interruptions from people asking me questions, it’s a real challenge to do an urban field study.

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL - NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

My daughter Dominique and enjoy drawing together, so we got up early in the morning, made some coffee and took a quick ride into Nashville. We like ride around and talk and catch-up on life and eventually we stumble onto something that we’d like to draw and on this trip we picked CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL on Broadway.

Organized in 1829, Christ Church was Nashville’s first Episcopal Parish.  Designed by Architect Francis Hatch Kimball and built in 1894 this church and became the diocesan cathedral, by designation, in 1997.

FIRE STATION NO. 1 - ROANOKE, VIRGINIA

Located in the Roanoke City Market Historic District, Fire Station No. 1 served as one of the longest continuously operating fire stations in from its completion in 1907. Designed by the Lynchburg firm of Huggins and Bates Station No. 1 was modeled after Philadelphia's Independence Hall,

In 1911 the city purchased their first engine powered fire truck and stationed it at No. 1. By 1918, horse drawn fire wagons were totally phased out in favor of the engine powered ones. Today, the building serves as a fire museum open to the general public and as a stable for the Roanoke Police Department's Mounted Patrol.

ABANDONED MACHINERY - FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE

I love the Abstract Quality and the Look that Abandoned Rusting Machinery has. It has that Man-Made element coupled with Nature working to reclaim what was once hers. Gravity, Sun, Wind, Ice and Rain all slowly and deliberately working together to reduce this once proud structure to dust. I have no idea what this site or this machinery was used for. It’s located in a valuable area in downtown Franklin, Tennessee adjacent to The Harpeth River. The land appears to be a BROWNFIELD site waiting for the right investor to come along and clean it up but until then, it’s just a pile of ABANDONED MACHINERY - FRANKLIN TENNESSEE.

ABBEY OF OUR LADY OF GETHSEMANI - BARDSTOWN, KENTUCKY

The Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani is a Trappist Monastery located on a 2,000 acre Farm in rural Kentucky. Even in today’s Modern World, The Monks still live a contemplative lifestyle that is full prayer, work and silence. The Monks follow The Rule of Saint Benedict and a daily prayer schedule called The Liturgy of the Hours. Founded 1848, the Monks like to say that they haven’t missed a day of prayers in over 150 years. The Monks support themselves by working the land and by selling their handmade Kentucky Bourbon Fruitcake and Chocolate Bourbon Fudge. Gethsemani was the home of Trappist monk, social activist and author Thomas Merton from 1941 until his death in 1968.

THE NATIONAL HOTEL - CALGARY, ALBERTA CANADA

Constructed in 1907, The National Hotel served the District as a tavern and a hotel. It was built close to the Canadian Pacific Railway station, the local brewery, and livery. It’s listed on Alberta’s Register of Historical Places.

After a long period of decline, The National Hotel has become a centerpiece in the revitalization of the Calgaray’s Inglewood Neighborhood. Today, the building is a cornerstone in the areas and is home to THE NASH, an upscale restaurant and the OFF CUT BAR. I highly recommend the Confit Chicken Ravioli.

THE CENTER STREET BRIDGE – CALGARY, ALBERTA CANADA

The Centre Street Bridge crosses the Bow River in Downtown Calgary, Alberta. It was built to replace the MacArthur Bridge that was damaged by ice damns and destroyed by a flood in 1915. Designed by John F. Green and completed in 1916, the bridge has both an upper and lower roadway as well as walkways along the sides of the upper section for pedestrians. The bridge connects the Chinatown District of Calgary with the community of Crescent Heights.

There are two ornamental pavilions flanking each end of the bridge that have cast concrete lion sculptures on top of them. A local legend says that the lions come alive at night and roam the streets of Chinatown. When the bridge was restored in 2001 and the original Lions were removed and replaced with replicas. The original Lions were put in storage and the city planed to relocate them to new train stations around Calgary we’re they’ll be free to roam again at night.

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY COURTHOUSE - SUNBURY, PENNSYLVANIA

I grew up in a small town in Central Pennsylvania, named Sunbury which is located in the middle of The Appalachian Mountains. Sunbury was an important Colonial American settlement because it occupied a strategic location at the confluence of the North and West branches of the Susquehanna River, It became the site of a frontier fort named, Fort Augusta, which was constructed by the British Army In 1756 to protect local English settlers.

Northumberland County was officially formed in 1772 prior to the American Revolution with Sunbury as its county seat. The Northumberland County Courthouse was built in 1887 and is listed on The National Register of Historic Places.

My Daughter Dominique and I enjoy sketching together and while visiting family in Pennsylvania we took ride to Sunbury so that she could see where we I grew up, walk around the town and sketches of The County Courthouse.

JAMES GEDDES ENGINE COMPANY No 6 NASHVILLE,  TENNESSEE I had some free time over the Holiday Weekend so I took an early morning ride into Nashville to draw this Historic Firehouse. Located in South Nashville on Second Avenue, the station was built in 1886 when the Fire Department still used horse-drawn vehicles. The Engine Company served The Rutledge Hill neighborhood and was named after prominent Nashvillian James Geddis who was a railroad pioneer. The circular tower on the right of the building still has the original fireman pole that the firemen slid down when answering an alarm. The firehouse was added to The National Register of Historic Places in 1978. My drawing was done with Soft Pastels and Charcoal on an 18” X 24” sheet of Strathmore 400 Series 80 lb. Drawing Paper. BLUEBIRD NESTING BOXI’m determined to fill up a new sketchbook that I bought with daily drawings, so I got up early this morning and drove over to Brentwood to draw this little Bluebird House that I saw on the edge of a parking lot at The Brentwood Baptist Church. I park near this Bird Box almost every morning because I commute into Nashville to write at Big Tent and the church allows people to park in their lot. I noticed that someone installed a handful of these around the grounds of the church and I plan to draw a few more of them. For this drawing, I used a Hand Cut Reed Pen that I made and Black Indian Ink on a 10 3/4 X 13 3/4 sheet of Plain White Paper. I love simple subjects like this BLUEBIRD NEST BOX

Guy-Wires And A Smokestack

There’s something about Urban Landscapes and Industrial Sites that captures my attention. It might be the starkness of a factory or the isolation of a warehouse that sticks out to me or just the challenge of trying to draw something that’s totally man-made.

This is a pencil study is part of a series of studies that I did of different industrial site in Framingham Massachusetts. Sometimes it starts to rain when you’re drawing outside and you get raindrops on your drawing that begin to dissolve the graphite. I think that it add a nice random texture to a field study that helps make it real.

Saint Mary’s Catholic Mission Church Babb, Montana

While camping in Montana, my daughter Dominique and I stumbled across this little church on The Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Babb, Montana. We spent an hour drawing it together and enjoying its peaceful, remote setting.  This “Mission Church”  is part of The Diocese of Helena that was founded in 1904 and is one of 38 Mission Churches that are still active today.  Babb is located just outside of Glacier National Park and is slightly South of the Canadian / US Border. It’s a very isolated area between the Rocky Mountains and the Prairies of Alberta.

If you take a moment and close your eyes and listen closely, you can still hear echoes of the congregation singing GIMME THAT OLD TIME RELIGION

My field study was done with Vine and Compressed Charcoal on a 14” X 17” sheet of Strathmore 300 Series Drawing Paper.
